Will there be northern lights?

Kuusamo is a great place to view the Northern Lights. However, there is no guarantee that you will see them as it is impossible to predict the exact weather conditions that are necessary for the lights to be visible. If the skies are clear, there is a big chance that you will be able to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights during this photo tour.

What camera equipment should I bring?

You should bring your camera, one wide lens 14-24mm which is good for northern lights, a medium tele lens 24-70mm which is good for general pictures and a tele lens 70-200mm so you can capture some details further away. Additionally, you should bring a tripod, batteries/charger, memory cards and different camera filters such as ND filters and CPL filters. Bring also your laptop so that you can edit your pictures and make sure to have with you an external hard drive for you back-up. 

How will the weather be?

Januari and February in Kuusamo, Finland is cold and snowy - perfect for winter photography! Temperatures can drop as low as -30 °C, so be sure to pack plenty of warm clothes and layers if you're planning to join this photo tour. 

What clothes should I bring?

When photographing in winter, it is important to dress appropriately for the conditions. Layering is key to staying warm, so make sure to wear breathable, lightweight merino wool base layers and insulating mid-layers. For your hands, hand warmers and good gloves that are suitable for photography are a must. A good pair of warm hiking shoes will help you walk through icy and snowy locations.For some locations that we will visit it's necessary to use snow shoes. Snow hoes are included in the price. Lastly, don't forget to bring a hat and scarf to help keep your head and neck warm.

What level of photography is required?

This photo tour is suitable for photographers of all levels, from entry-level to professional. Whether you're just starting out in photography or have years of experience, this tour will provide you with the opportunity to take amazing photos. You'll learn new techniques while exploring the beautiful scenery and capturing stunning images. Professional photographers will also find this tour beneficial as they can use the time to practice their photography skills and gain inspiration. No matter your level, this tour will help you take your photography to the next level.

What kind of insurance is included in the tour?

Unfortunately, we do not provide any insurance in the tour package. We strongly recommend you to purchase your own travel insurance before joining the tour.

Oscar is a passionate photographer living near Helsinki in Finland. He has been taking photos since 2013 and has since then organized numerous photography workshops, gathering over 150 participants. Oscar speaks fluently Greek, Swedish, English and has a good knowledge in Finnish. Oscar first visited Kuusamo in 2014 and has been there numerous times since then, giving him extensive knowledge of the area and its beauty. He will provide you with tips and tricks on how to get the most out of your photos and he'll be there to answer any questions you have.
